The normal order of business was suspended for the September monthly meeting.  A tree identification walk was conducted by Robert ‘Marty’ Martynowych on Big Mountain on the west side of Route 42 on the Roaring Creek Tract of the Weiser State Forest.  Eleven members and guests participated in the educational stroll along the Aristes Trail.

Twas a night to remember, that night in September

When we went for a walk in the forest;

The weather was fine with a slight scent of pine

Who knew what trees stood before us.

Led by a forester called Bob, who sure knew his job,

We walked west on Aristes trail.

On top of Big Mountain, that is for certain,

The ten stayed right on Bob’s tail.

Bob spoke of pitch pine and quaking aspen and sign

Of deer that may have browsed through.

Bob commented on stumps and timbering and lumps

Of coal that may be soon become fuel.

Though we didn’t hike too far, away from our car,

Our group learned something of trees.

Of smooth barks and roots, varied colors and fruits,

Of opposite and alternating leaves.

We too soon turned around, and returned to the sounds

Of traffic on route 42.

What may stick in our mind as we pass thru our time

Was this parting wisdom so true….

Trees tell us some things through their seeds and their rings,

But there is more that lies therein,

From the juniper tree, Bob assures you and me

We enjoy the fine taste of gin.
