Meeting minutes: October 16, 2006
7 PM Southern Columbia High School–Room 102
Attendance: Bob Rush; Kristen Vitkauskas; Carl Miller; R. ‘Marty’ Martynowych; Cathy Haffner; Steve Rier; Joe and Winnie McNelis; Wayne Petro; Dave Ernest; Art and Clare McMahon; Carey Entz; Amy Mowery; Michael Capita; Charlie Schoffstall; Tom Spock.
I. Presentation–Dr. Steve Rier, Aquatic Ecologist from Bloomsburg University. Intro by Bob, then Cathy. Dr. Steve discussed ‘Basic Stream Ecology’ and preliminary results from research conducted in the Roaring Creek Watershed.
II. Call to order/Bob Rush.
III. Meeting minutes from September meeting/Tom Spock.
IV. Treasurer’s report/Carl Miller. Carl reports ending balance of $1161.75 for time period 9-20-06 to 10-16-06. New memberships–Trout Unlimited/$150; Diane Holenda/$20.
V. Old Business.
1. Coldwater Partnership Grant. Intro by Bob, follow–up by Cathy. Cathy noted a Conservation Plan will have to be developed, to include (but not limited to) what has been done within the Watershed to evaluate the contents therein. Some ideas for on-going development of this plan–visual inspection/record data.
2. Chesapeake Bay Foundation ‘Free Trees for Streams’. Intro by Bob, follow–up by Cathy. Cathy explained that Andy Wodehouse is the local rep for CBF/go-to person when possible planting areas are identified. Wayne mentioned possibility of securing trees for planting at site re-construction of Millgrove Mill, (which is located in the Watershed).
3. Watershed Expo in West Virginia. Due to employment obligations, Bob is unable to attend the event. Kristen and Cathy are still going to make the trip.
4. Stand at Outdoor Expo in January 2007. Bob discussed sharing the space with other groups at the stand. Those present agree this is a good idea.
5. Catawissa Halloween Parade. All present feel it would be best to have float in next year’s parade.
6. Logos. Bob introduced the topic, explained he is still contacting possible manufacturer’s to determine best price. At this time, no specific cost identified (estimates of $6 to $7 per patch, dependant upon quantity).
VI. New Business.
1. Membership Certificates. Bob introduced he topic. Asked those present to investigate any possible software to develop computer-generated document for membership commemorative.
2. Pizza for workshop/next meeting. Bob noted idea to order pizza for next meeting. Those in attendance agree order could be placed once tally determines applicable count. Bob asked for motion to purchase pizza; 1st by Kristen, 2nd by Carl.
3. PA Cleanways. Intro by Bob, noted this organization is looking for illegal dumpsites within the state of PA. Bob advised anyone with knowledge of sites to contact him; possibility of RCVCA starting chapter. Membership benefits would include help with liability insurance/funding for clean–ups/501 C3 organization.
VI. New Business (continued).
4. Tax credit for farmers. Bob noted that letter was received from Rep. Merle Phillips, offering support in this matter. Letters were also sent to other local reps.
5. Water Resources Education Network. Cathy noted that up to $5,000 funding availability through the WREN; can be used for educational materials. Grant application is due 4-2007. The Network is partnered with The League of Women Voters.
6. Woodland Owner’s Association. Intro by Art, follow-up by Marty. Info given RE: upcoming meeting for the WOA..
7. Miner’s Hike. Roaring Creek Valley and Catawissa Historical Society will sponsor hike through the Watershed on 11-4-06.
8. Next meeting.
Bob identified the next meeting would be held on 11-16-06; Joan Satler to give stream monitoring workshop.
Bob called for meeting to be adjourned; 1st by Tom, 2nd by Carl. Bob adjourned the meeting.
