Roaring Creek Valley Conservation Association
Meeting Minutes November 17, 2005
Time and place: 7 pm, Southern Columbia Area High School
Attendance: Kristen Vitkauskas, Wayne Petro, Tom Spock, Carl Miller, Mary Wagner, Cathy Haffner
Minutes: The goal of the meeting was to draft bylaws for the Association. The meeting began with a brief discussion of proposed activities to boost awareness of the watershed, in the watershed, stemming from ideas Kristen had since the last meeting. In addition to the map idea proposed by Mary Ann in the October meeting, Kristen suggested posting small, informational signs at major localities (Knoebel’s, Rohrbachs, egs.) to let people know they are in the Roaring Creek watershed. Another idea she had was to conduct a ‘Bioblitz’ throughout the watershed. Experts in various fields (aquatics, mammals, birds, insects, plants) will be contacted to assist in this effort. Cathy proposed asking Bloomsburg University professors because they would likely volunteer their time. No decisions/plans were made. This was simply a discussion.
The bulk of the meeting was spent drafting the Association bylaws using other watershed association bylaws as examples. Bylaws were drafted and will be disseminated to Association participants not in attendance for their comments. Membership dues are yet to be established.
Just before adjournment, the group discussed the scheduling of a general meeting to which the county commissioners, township supervisors, representatives from DCNR, Game Commission, DEP, etc., will be personally invited. Association officers will be elected at this meeting, bylaws approved, and membership dues collected. A mass mailing will go out one month prior to this meeting and flyers will be posted around the watershed. Local newspapers will also be contacted. It was decided that early 2006 (January or February) will be the best time for the meeting so that Association activities can be organized for early spring.
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 15, 7 pm, Southern Columbia Area High School. The goals for the meeting are to finalize the bylaws and plan the general meeting.
