Roaring Creek Valley Conservation Association

Meeting Minutes

15 November 2007 - Southern Columbia High School Rom 102

The meeting started with a presentation on the restoration of the American chestnut by

Blair Carbaugh, Ph. D. of the PA Chapter for the American Chestnut Foundation.

The business meeting followed the presentation after a short break.

Meeting minutes from the October meeting were not read because the Secretary was not

present and others did not bring a copy. Those who had read them did not have any

corrections/deletions or other edits.

Treasurer’s report was given by Wayne Petro. Current balance is $1792.74

Cathy Haffner provided updates on the Growing Greener Support Grant. A draft of the

brochure was passed around and the maps were discussed. Cathy provided an example of

a Chesapeake Bay map that can be included in the brochure. All agreed it was a good

idea. Text to accompany the map was written by Kristen and Cathy. The map and text

will be sent to the graphic designer at SEDA-COG to be incorporated into the next draft.

The display board ordered through the GG grant was purchased and delivered to the

group. It will be stored in Kristen’s classroom.

Cathy asked everyone to start thinking about a newsletter, which is a grant deliverable.

Cathy also provided updates on the Coldwater Conservation Plan. She met with the GIS

class at Bloomsburg University that is helping with the mapping components of the plan.

Volunteers handed in their stream assessments. Bob, Tom, and Carl have not conducted

theirs yet. All others are complete.

The RCVCA catch phrase was briefly discussed. Still need to work on that.

Bob Rush was not a the meeting, but mentioned wanted to pass along that he continues to

work toward getting approval for the watershed signs. He also said that he has requested

quotes for silk-screened t-shirts and embroidered button-down shirts.

New business followed the old business.

Cathy said that Ed Wytovich was willing and able to present to the group on a topic of

your choosing in 2008.

The group decided to make the annual meeting in December a party. Mark Deibler

offered the stone house in Weiser State Forest as a location. All agreed. It will be a

potluck (covered dish).

Wayne Kashner reminded everyone that elections are to occur in December, with

nominations occurring in November. Since a quorum was present, a motion was made

and approved to accept the nominations during the meeting, keep nominations open

throughout the month and also accept nominations just before elections at the December

meeting. (Kashner 1st/ Rier 2nd).

Nominations made the night of the meeting were:

Kristen Vitkauskas – Vice President (Mark D. 1st/ Wayne K. 2nd)

Wayne Kashner – Secretary (Kristen V. 1st/ Mark D. 2nd)

Other business:

Carl Miller noted that the website needs to be updated.

Mark Deibler mentioned that at 1,937 acre parcel was on the market for $5. It is located

in Coal Township, Northumberland Co, and adjoins Weiser State Forest.

There was a reminder from Wayne Kashner that the internal audit has to be completed for

the year.

Steve Rier invited anyone interested to a seminar on hellbenders at the University the

upcoming Friday.
