Roaring Creek Conservation Association Meeting Minutes: March 15, 2007 7 PM Southern Columbia High School–Room 102
Attendance: Kristen Vitkauskas; Cathy Haffner; Steve Rier; Joan Sattler; Mary Wagner; Wayne Kashner; Mark Deibler; Tom Spock. *NOTE* President Bob Rush and Treasurer Wayne Petro were unable to attend the meeting.
I. Call to order/Kristen Vitkauskas.
II. Meeting minutes from January meeting/Tom Spock–no meeting was held in February 2007 due to inclimate weather. Kristen called for motion to accept minutes–1st by Steve; 2nd by Wayne K..
III. Treasurer’s report–Kristen. Kristen noted a number of annual memberships renewals–Kristen; Dave Ernest; new annual–Steve Rier; and lifetime membership–Carl Beaver. No other reports on finances. Kristen called for motion to accept report–1st by Mark; 2nd by Steve.
IV. Old Business
A. By-law Adjustments. Kristen introduced the topic. While some questions came about the process for election officers–it was determined current by-laws address the nomination and voting in acceptable terms. Membership/dues–All members present agree it is best to pro-rate annual memberships to a quarterly rate. Call by Kristen to accept adjustment to by-laws concerning membership–1st by Mark; 2nd by Cathy.
B. Long-term meeting plans (drafts/ideas). All members present feel it best to have monthly public meetings, possibly alternating speakers to present every other month. IV. Old Business (cont.)
C. Stormwater Project. Kristen introduced the topic, follow-up by Cathy. Cathy noted that application for grants to gain assistance for this project would have to be completed by April. Also, members noted a good way to get the program started (and get both students and public involved) would be to develop ‘Rain gardens’--small plantings on various locations throughout the school property that would be highly visible, and a good way to lead to larger Storm-abatement programs.
D. Expo reflections. Kristen noted that overall, participation in the event was a success. She felt it important to thank Bob Rush for the space, and appreciate the help of all who volunteered to ‘man’ the stand. Cathy identified that Kristen should be commended for setting up the display booth.
E. Coldwater Heritage Grant. Cathy noted application for the grant was still pending–should hear by next week if approved for RCVCA.
V. New Business.
A. Update–Stormwater Project. Stormwater survey meeting at Southern Columbia High School. Kristen noted Mike Yeager described initial meeting with RCVCA, added the district is looking forward to the Project. Cathy noted that a report about the project was completed by Barry Travelpiece, Columbia County Conservation District. The report is a basic blue-print for starting the project.
B. Upcoming Envirothon. Kristen introduced the topic–discussed possibility of having RCVCA contribute $100 donation for the event. Kristen and Tom approve the funding–Kristen called for motion to accept–1st by Mark; 2nd by Steve.
C. Postcard stamp purchase. Kristen introduced the topic–noted that stamps must be purchased to send mailings to members not capable of receiving e-mail notifications. Kristen called for motion to purchase stamps–1st by Steve; 2nd by Mark.
D. Tom asked about possible RCVCA sponsored clean-up of local State Forest land–all members present thought it was a good idea. Kristen will Check-out the website for the state-wide clean-up, to be held on April 22, 2007.
E. Update on Growing Greener Grant. Cathy noted that one more item was purchased with funds from this grant–a portable display board.
F. Reminder about upcoming workshop. Kristen and Cathy noted Landowner’s Wildlife and Woodlot Workshop, to be held March 31, 2007 at PPL Montour Preserve. Added that registration must be received by March 21, 2007.
G. Trip to DCNR Forest Lands–Weiser Tract. Kristen noted that she will take students for trip to DCNR lands for monitoring of streams located within the grounds, as well as discussion of careers in related fields.
Kristen called for motion to end meeting–1st by Tom; 2nd by Wayne K.. Next meeting to be held April 19, 2007, 7 PM at Southern Columbia HS–Room 102.
