ROARING CREEK VALLEY CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION
Minutes of June 19, 2008 Monthly Meeting
Meeting was held at the Quaker Meeting House in Locust Township. Wayne Petro gave a talk on the history of Quaker meetings, meeting houses and the Quakers’ settling into the local area.
Vice President Kristen Vitkauskas presided over the regular meeting. Wayne Kashner gave the Secretary’s reports for April and May, 2008. Motion to accept the minutes as read was made by Mary Ellen Beaver.
Wayne Petro gave the Treasurer’s report. Motion to accept the report was made by Joe McNelis.
Old Business:
Pro-rated membership dues were discussed as pertaining to members who join the Association during the course of the year. The bylaws address this issue.
New Business:
The ‘adopt-a-trail’ program was discussed. Mark Deibler noted that log-books could be maintained at each end of the trail in the watershed. This idea had been discussed at the February meeting.
The July 17, 2008 meeting will be held in the Roaring Creek watershed at the picnic area near the middle reservoir. Both the Route 42 and Route 54 gates will be open at 6:00 PM to allow motor vehicle access.
The August 21, 2008 meeting will be held at Tom Spock’s residence at 32B Wagner Bridge Road. This will be a picnic type meeting as well. This gathering is tentatively to be held in the 6:00 to 6:30 PM time frame.
A motion for the Association to pay for the meat (entrée), plates and cups for the July meeting was made by Leon Shoup, seconded by Mike Zackowski.
The question was raised for the Association to perform stream assessments again this year. Kristen will speak with Cathy Haffner about this. In 2007, training was conducted in September and assessments were conducted in September and October.
Wayne Petro questioned the feasibility of the Association opening a nature trail within the state forest watershed in an effort to garner some notoriety for the Association. Mark Deibler responded that they (DCNR) try to steer people toward established groups to make it more easily managed but is open to suggestions.
The Adopt-A-Highway program was mentioned as a means to get our name out. This would be a good means to this end as the Association already performs litter pick-ups along Route 42. Dan Brassington will acquire the PennDot forms for the Association to review at the July meeting.
Good of the Order:
A beaver dam has been constructed in the watershed.
The Association thanked Wayne Petro for his historical presentation and thanked Kristen Vitkauskas for her efforts in conducting field trips.
Motion to adjourn was made by Leon Shoup.
