Meeting minutes: August 24, 2006
7 PM Southern Columbia High School–Room 102
Attendance: Bob Rush; Kristen and Emily Vitkauskas; Carl Miller; Cathy Haffner; Joan Sattler; Mark Deibler; R. ‘Marty’ Martynowych; Wayne Petro; David Booth; Wayne K.; Tom Spock.
I. Call to order/Bob Rush.
II. Meeting minutes from July meeting/Tom Spock.
III. Treasurer’s report/Carl Miller. Carl reported $177.50 net profit for water sales at historic baseball game. Motion to pay bills (water/ice) for event–1st Wayne P., 2nd Kristen.
IV. Old Business
A. Baseball fundraiser Bob expressed thanks to Wayne P. And Historical Society and RCVCA members who helped with water sales that day.
B. Update on stream sampling. Cathy noted Bloomsburg University intern continues to compile data gathered by student, Cathy and Steve Rier–Steve can do presentation w/results.
V. New Business
A. Coldwater Heritage Partnership Grant application. Intro by Bob, more info by Cathy. Conservation Plan coupled w/Trout Unlimited to offer assistance for watersheds. Grant request due by 12-15-2006.
B. Chesapeake Bay Foundation ‘Free Trees for Streams’ Intro by Bob, more info by Cathy. Proposal deadline for this grant due 9-15-06. Good way to get public involved w/association; possibly coordinate Spring 2007 planting.
C. Watershed forum in West Virginia. Bob noted possibility of sending reps to forum, to be held November 2006.
D. Partnership with others for various projects. Bob explained that UCC church in Numidia offered assistance (if needed) for future clean-ups, etc., with-in the watershed. Mark added help is always needed, best case would be to link volunteer groups with specific projects. Also–try to identify contacts for each group.
V. New Business (cont.)
E. Media to promote RCVCA. Bob and Marty identified WKOK radio (w/DJ Mark Lawrence) as positive method to get association in public spot-light.
F. Cathy noted that The Chesapeake Bay Foundation offered RCVCA free membership for one year.
G. Reply from Rep. Bob Belfanti RE: Growing Greener Fund. Bob and Cathy noted that Rep. Belfanti offered letter of thanks for being made aware of issue, encouraged on-going contact for assistance.
H. Sports Expo in 2007. Bob noted space reserved for RCVCA at Expo, to be held January 25-28, 2007. Volunteers would be appreciated to ‘man the stand’.
I.. Promotional materials/fundraisers. Bob introduced the topic. Various methods discussed for promotion included hats; t-shirts; patches; mugs. Also, development of brochure/reference materials to promote the group. Discussion about ‘Calendar’ project to promote/highlight areas within the watershed.
J. Monitoring workshop. Joan volunteered to do training for the workshop–all board members requested to be present for the meeting, tentatively scheduled for 11-16-2006 at 5 PM.
K. Signage along Rte. 42. General discussion by all present–possible placement of signs through-out the watershed to identify ‘Entering Roaring Creek Valley Watershed’. Contacts will have to be made with various townships/supervisors/PennDot to discuss signs.
L. Next meeting.
Bob noted that next meeting would be held on 9-21-06 at 7 PM, Southern Columbia High School/Room 102. Presenter for meeting will be Todd Rush, Resource Conservationist for Columbia County Conservation District. Discussion topic will be ‘Best Management Practices on Farms’.
Bob called for motion to adjourn meeting; 1st by Mark, 2nd by Carl. Bob adjourned meeting.
