ROARING CREEK VALLEY CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION
Minutes of August 20, 2009 Monthly Meeting
President Wayne Petro called the meeting to order at Southern High School, Room 102 at 7:00 pm.
Ray Hosler, Soil Conservationist with the Natural Resource Conservation Services, USDA gave a talk on soil conservation, erosion protection using waterways and diversions and the department’s efforts to encourage good farming practices such as no-till and planting along the natural contours of the land.
The Secretary’s report was given and approved as read.
The Treasurer’s report, provided by Vickie Zackowski, showed a balance of $2228.46.
Unfinished Business:
The Association’s part of the bacteria monitoring project is complete. Kristen Vitkauskas reported that a good variety of sampling had been obtained due to the plentiful rainfall during the course of the 12 week monitoring period. It is not known when the results of the sampling will be made available.
Committee Reports:
The Hellbender Half Marathon & 5k committee report was provided by Dan Brassington.
Kristin Vitkauskas made a motion to use $200 from the Association’s account to make change on race day. The motion was duly seconded and the membership voted in favor of the motion.
The watershed boundary sign and watershed tour project is continuing. A motion was made by Ralph Evans to a utilize King Coal tour bus for the watershed tour at a cost of $650. The motion was duly seconded and the membership voted in favor of the motion. The wateshed tour will be held on October 24. A committee meeting to discuss the boundary signs and watershed tour will be held on September 9 at 7:00 pm at Room 102 at the Southern High School.
Cathy Haffner noted that bills for these two projects should be sent to the county conservation district as the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc. Watershed Sign/Tour Project will be paying via the reimbursable grant.
A tree identification walk will be the featured event at the Association’s September 17 monthly meeting. Robert “Marty” Martynowych will be conducting the walk. All interested members and guests are encouraged to attend and should meet at 6:00 pm at the Weiser State Forest, Roaring Creek Tract along Route 42 at the gate near Aristes on Big Mountain.
