Meeting Minutes: August 16, 2007, 6 PM Rohrbach’s Farm Market
Attendance: Bob Rush; Kristen Vitkauskas; Wayne Petro; Cathy Haffner; Mark Deibler;
Wayne Kashner; Joe and Winnie McNelis; Mary Ellen Beaver; Joe Norwich;
Ed Lease–PA Farmland Preservation of Columbia County; Renee Carey–NC PA Conservancy; Rohrbach family; Tom Spock.

I. Bob introduced presenter Ed Lease–PA Farmland Preservation of Columbia County. Ed talked about the program, main goal being to preserve farmland within the Commonwealth of PA, specifically Columbia County area. He noted current number of farms enrolled in program, goals for future of the farmlands in PA and importance of preserving vanishing farm areas.
II. Next presenter for meeting was Renee Carey, representative for North Central Pennsylvania Conservancy. Renee explained goals of NCPC–Land trust devoted to conserving the working lands and identifying waters of Northcentral PA for enjoyment of present and future generations.
III.. Bob called monthly meeting to order. No meeting minutes from July meeting, due to
informal nature of that gathering. Bob recognized DCNR for facilitating transport,
presentations by M.. Deibler and R. Martynowych, and use of picnic grove. Bob also
noted that incorporation paperwork was received back and approved. He thanked Carl
Miller and Cathy for their work on the application.
IV. Old Business.
A. Adopt-A-Highway/Signage.
Bob noted that he is working with staff PA Cleanways to determine options for
placing signage indicating entrance into the RCVCA watershed. To date, regional
reps from Pen Dot have been less than helpful regarding this matter. Bob added that
individual in charge of assigning ‘adopting’ highways would welcome participation of
RCVCA in this endeavor.
B. Coldwater Conservation Plan.
Bob introduced the topic, follow-up by Cathy. She noted that stream assessment
training could be held September 10, 2007 @ 5 PM. Marty Friday will show interested
participants protocol for assessment of stream areas. Cathy and Bob encouraged all
present to consider access points along stream frontage for on-going monitoring.
Training will be held along nature trail at Southern Columbia HS.
C. Growing Greener Grant.
Cathy noted that funds available from grant are available and purchase plans would
have to be made for display board and brochure.
D. Treasurer’s Report.
Wayne P. noted no income/outflow for the month of June. One yearly membership
was renewed by Michael Holenda, ending balance to date $1837.74.
E. Logo.
Bob introduced the topic. He noted members present could list shirt sizes for eventual
placement of order with supplier Bob has contacted previously. Also, shirt style for the
clothing items was discussed.
V. New Business.
A. Data gathering for stream assessment, etc.,.
Cathy noted that she spoke to professor of Biological Sciences at Bloomsburg
University, who offered assistance of his class in compiling and consolidating data
gathered in past and upcoming months in relation to stream assessment project.
B. Locations for future meetings.
Wayne P. noted it would be useful to consider other sites for future meetings.
Possibly outdoor locations within the watershed, like Pinnacle/Sharp Ridge area.
Bob ended meeting by thanking presenters Ed and Renee for presentations, as well as rohrbachfamily for providing facilities for the evening’s meeting. Next meeting to be held September 20, 2007 at 7 PM, Southern Columbia HS, Room 102. Call for motion to end meeting 1st Wayne K., 2nd by Tom Spock.
